I love you

I love you.
Not because I keep your picture in my wallet
or on the cell phone screen
or on the silver frame besides our bed
or because the cards I give you
for different life’s occasions say so
or because this is the line we usually end our phone conversations with.
Even this poem and her older sisters
fighting hard over who becomes your favorite,
do not speak it loud enough.

The ladybug could tell you
the hours I spend talking about you,
how she gets jealous in the middle of the conversation
and suddenly leaves without an excuse.

The bronze man sitting on the metal bench
in St. George Boulevard
would acknowledge the evenings
I spend besides him painting,
how he admires the colors and tiny details
I always remember about you
the hair, the clothes, the accessories.
And every time I finish one of your portraits,
he is so impressed that he uncrosses his legs
and smiles showing me his greenish teeth.

You can also look within the crease of our relationship,
you will find a hidden routine waiting
for his chance to bite me
and to shed his venom into my veins,
how agitated he is becoming lately
for failing day after day to catch me.

And remember a few days ago,
when the birds woke-up startled
by a sharp and loud scream
shredding the night’s silence into pieces
and the lights got turned on
brightening the souls and the dark windows.
A scream was heard by folks already awake
in the other hemispheres,
its frequency made their bones gel
and had their hearts skipping beats.
Yes darling that was my scream
with the same words I shush every night into your ears
while you are asleep
I love you.

To Valentine or Not To Valentine!!

I've noticed this year there's a heated debate about Valentine's day. Many people think that it is a commercial event and it has nothing to do with love. They believe the gifts, the cards, the flowers, and the choclates...are all just a waste of money. Possibly our current economic woes play a part in this.

Let's examine the results of the Poll I conducted about celebrating or not celebrating Valentine's Day?

28 votes so far

25% indicated that they never celebrate Valentine's day, who needs it anyway?!

17% they do celebrate it once in a while.

17% they celebrate if they have a significant one in their life.

39% celebrate Valentine's day whether they have someone special in their lives or not.

The majority still consider Valentine's day a valid occasion to celebrate love.

I agree that Valentine's Day is not about the dinners, show-offs, or jewelery. Sometimes we lack to express moments of appreciation towards our second-halves, especially in the case of married couples or couples in long-term relationships. I see nothing wrong with having an occasion to say nice words, or to make a nice gesture towards your lover. It does not have to be in an expensive way. If we could only just find the time to revive the feelings and sentiments that once existed. It could be a new beginning; once again appreciating special moments and bringing back to life the joyful days in our relationships.

I did not ask the gender of people voting for the Poll but I have a sense (and I could be biased or simply wrong) that some men don't care much about Valentine's Day or maybe they just celebrate it with their partner because they have to. I simply believe that due to the daily stresses of life, only a few men actually celebrate the day from the heart. If only they knew that one day of reliving those special moments really can make a difference with their significant other.

My personal opinion, we should not ignore the opportunities to express love, passion and appreciation towards each other. And if valentine's will restore or bring them back so why not? It would be nice to have more of these days in our lives.

Happy Valentine's Day, whether you love it or hate it!!

Now I leave you with the words of Khalil Gibran from his book The Profet

" Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love."

The pillow

My queen size bed with two pillows
the top one for my dreams
the lower one for my head
I have always slept on my right side
facing the sunset, the whales, a wish,
the fish boats, and the Japanese islands
dreaming west, absolute west
until I came across her in one of those dreams
I brought her to my bed
I gave her the top pillow and half of my sleep
I learned how to turn on my left side
facing the sunrise, the heat,
her eyes, the desert, and the great pyramid
dreaming east, absolute east
One night after a volcanic argument
I asked for my pillow
Since then I lie alone
sleepless on the equatorial line

facing my back
